Arcee's "Movies to Watch" List for 2011

Just like many of you out there, we here at Nfamous are huge movie fans, myself in particular. I like going to see as many movies as I can, especially when they dabble within the genres I like, such as gaming and comic books. (Even though most of those types of films are hit or miss — mostly miss — we still try to support our faves.) So what I have compiled here is a brief list of movies coming out in 2011 (tentatively, cause we all know how these release dates get pushed back sometimes) you should definitely keep your eyes open for.

I am listing them on a month-by-month basis and giving you a little detail about the ones I feel are the "must watch" movies of that month. I know not all of you will agree with me on many of these, but that is the fun of being different, right? So without any more delay, here is my list of movies to watch for in 2011.

January 2011 — The Green Hornet

Opens Jan. 14, courtesy of Sony Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

I am a little tossed on January much more so than other months this year because nothing really is calling out to me. Out of all the movies being released this month, The Green Hornet starring Seth Rogen looks to be the most promising. Based in part on the serialized Green Hornet series as well as several radio dramas and a television show from the 1960s, The Green Hornet looks to be the most entertaining. That is if they can keep it from becoming too much of a mess and too comedic. Other noticeable films being released in January include the supernatural thriller Season of the Witch starring Nicolas Cage and the horror film The Rite starring Anthony Hopkins, though neither of these strikes high on my radar.

February 2011 — Unknown

Opens Feb. 18, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

Liam Neeson seems to be into some kind of action/suspense film phase after starring in Taken. Still, his latest film, Unknown, seems to be pretty interesting, though I have the feeling we are going to be watching Taken 2 or something along those lines. Still, I enjoyed Taken and the story of a man who wakes up after a car crash to find someone else stole his family and identity; the concept strikes me as interesting. At least the story for Unknown seems better than the other two noticeable February releases, the thriller film The Roommate starring Minka Kelly and Leighton Meister and the teen sci-fi film I Am Number Four starring Alex Pettyfer and Timothy Olyphant.

March 2011 — Sucker Punch

Opens March 25, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

I will admit right now the only reason I am so looking forward to Sucker Punch is because it looks like some kind of mind fuck dream you don't want to wake up from. Starring a bevy of beauties led by Emily Browning, this surrealish movie by Zack Snyder looks quite impressive, and it only keeps looking prettier and prettier ever since I saw previews of it at Comic Con in July 2010. To be completely honest, I am kind of a Zack Snyder fan as of late, loving his adaptations of Dawn of the Dead, 300, and Watchmen — and I am willing to forgive him for Legend of the Guardians. Sucker Punch by far is my "must see" March movie ahead of other noticeable films that month, such as the sci-fi film Battle: Los Angeles starring Aaron Eckhart and the horror film Red Riding Hood starring Amanda Seyfried.

April 2011 — Your Highness

Opens April 8, courtesy of Universal Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

So you take the people behind Pineapple Express and bring in James Franco, Danny McBride, Zooey Deschanel, and Natalie Portman and have them star in a stoner film set in some fantasy world with modern undertones in it, and to me, it sounds like you have yourself one hell of a funny comedy. If you haven't had the chance, I recommend watching the Your Highness "red band" trailer on YouTube sometime soon to see what I mean. Oh, and Natalie Portman in some wicked thong leather bikini is one hell of a draw for me as well. Other noticeable films in April are the action film Fast Five starring Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, the action thriller Hanna starring Saoirse Ronan and Eric Bana, the techno suspense thriller Source Code starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and  the horror film Insidious starring Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne.

May 2011 — Thor

Opens May 6, courtesy of Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

The summer movie season kicks off in a big way with the release of the highly anticipated adaption of Thor based on the popular Marvel comics character. Starring Chris Hemsworth as the titular character, the Norse god of thunder, Thor is part of Marvel's lead up to the Avengers movie being released in 2012. If any of you out there know anything about me, I am a huge comic book fan, and I have been looking forward to this film for quite some time now, especially after the way it was teased during the secret ending of Iron Man 2. Of course, being the start of the summer movie season, other noticeable releases for May include the action adventure film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides starring Johnny Depp, the comedy The Hangover: Part II, and the animated sequel Kung Fu Panda 2 starring Jack Black.

June 2011 — Green Lantern

Opens June 17, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

Ever since DC has gotten back into the feature films game with the release of Batman Begins, I have been waiting in anticipation for this one. Green Lantern is my all-time favorite DC character, and I am dying to finally see this one. Sure, I have my complaints about the way the costume looks on star Ryan Reynolds, but I still want to see this film. I just hope they take as good a care of the character as DC has done with the Batman franchise. Other big films being released this month include the superhero film X-Men: First Class starring James McAvoy (which was almost my "must see" film of the month), the secretive sci-fi film Super 8 starring Elle Fanning and Kyle Chandler, and the animated sequel Cars 2 starring Owen Wilson.

July 2011 — Captain America: The First Avenger

Opens July 22, courtesy of Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

Where Green Lantern is my favorite DC character, Captain America is not only my favorite Marvel character, but my favorite comic book character — period! So I won't even waste time going into why I want to watch this film. That statement \should make it plain enough why I am going to watch Captain America: The First Avenger starring Chris Evans and Hugo Weaving. Of course, July is a huge month during the summer movie season, so there are a lot of other movies to see. The sci-fi action film Transformers: Dark of the Moon starring Shia LaBeouf, the conclusion to the epic fantasy film series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part II starring Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, the western sci-fi Cowboys and Aliens starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford, and the comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love starring Steve Carell and Julianne Moore.

August 2011 — Conan the Barbarian

Opens Aug. 19, courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

This remake of the 1982 classic that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's career stars James Momoa taking on the iconic role of Conan the Barbarian who was created by fantasy writer Robert E. Howard. The fantasy film also stars Rachel Nichols, Rose McGowan, Stephen Lang, and Ron Perlman. I haven't seen much of this film, of course it being released in August has a lot to do with that, but I am a huge Conan fan and have been dying for either a sequel or remake for some time now. Still, August is pretty packed with other movies I am dying to catch like the horror anthology remake film Fright Night starring Colin Farrell, the horror film Final Destination 5 starring Emma Bell and Nicholas D'Agosto, the adventure comedy film 30 Minutes or Less starring Jesse Eisenberg, and the sci-fi film The Darkest Hour starring Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby.

September 2011  Warrior

Opens Sept. 9, courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

A change of pace from the other films I listed here, Warrior is a drama about an estranged alcoholic father and former boxer (Nick Nolte) who has a chance to have a relationship with his youngest son as he trains him to become a mixed martial arts fighter to enter a tournament — the same tournament his oldest son is also competing in. Other noticeable movies this month include the supernatural thriller The Apparition starring Ashley Greene, the suspense thriller film Abduction starring Taylor Lautner and Sigourney Weaver, the horror film Dream House starring Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz, and the techno thriller film Now starring Amanda Seyfried and Justin Timberlake.

October 2011 — The Thing

Opens Oct. 14, courtesy of Universal Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

Oh yeah, now we are in October — the month horror movies actually make perfect sense. Not that they don't have their place throughout the year  just ... in October, this is exactly what I expect to see at the movie theaters. I can think of no better film to want to watch this month than The Thing, a prequel to the 1982 horror film of the same name by John Carpenter. This film looks to explore what happened to the original Norwegian crew that discovered the alien creature the American Antarctic research team later stumble upon. Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, this film has certainly a lot of promise — as well as a lot to live up to given the original film's status. Other noticeable films this month include the action thriller film Contagion starring Matt Damon and the supernatural horror film Paranormal Activity 3 starring Katie Featherston.

November 2011 — Immortals

Opens Nov. 11, courtesy of Universal Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

I am a sucker for epic action adventure films, and Immortal seems right up my alley. Taking place in ancient Greece, a power mad King Hyperion of Crete played by Mickey Rourke unleashes war on ancient Greece as a lowly peasant named Theseus joined by allies Phaedra and Stavros try to stop the mad king and prevent him from destroying both the gods of Olympus and humanity itself. I mean, in a month that sees the release of the animated film Puss in Boots starring Antonio Banderas, the family comedy film The Muppets starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams, and the teen romantic fantasy film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn  Part I, it is kind of clear why I went the way I did with Immortals.

December 2011 — Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Opens Dec. 16, courtesy of Paramount Pictures

Arcee's "Must See" Movies for 2011

I am going to come out and say it: I am a huge Tom Cruise fan, and I love the Mission Impossible film series. Yeah, they may be severely lacking in the story department, but they sure are entertaining. So that is why I am picking the fourth film in the franchise, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, as my pick for December. It's the end of the year, and I really just want to be entertained to keep my mind off the stress of year-end job duties and holiday festivities and the sort. When I go to a movie in December, I really don't want to think too much or anything like that. I just want to sit back and watch a movie that will be enjoyable, and this series has always entertained me. Other films I also want to see in December include the action mystery film Sherlock Holmes 2 starring Robert Downey Jr., the crime drama The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig, and the fictional film War Horse starring David Thewlis and Benedict Cumberbatch.

So that is it — my list of movies to keep an eye out for this year. I know it is loaded with comic book adaptations, horror, and action-suspense films, but that is just my personal taste. What about you all out there? What movies are you looking forward to checking out this year? Let me and everyone at Nfamous know by commenting below. What's so funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way?

God, are they going to ruin

God, are they going to ruin The Thing the way they ruined A Nightmare on Elm Street? STOP REMAKING CLASSICS, YOU HOLLYWOOD ASSHOLES. (Yes, I understand this is a prequel, but still.)

I completely understand what

I completely understand what you mean. As I told Jon on FB, the lack of creativity in Hollywood is disturbing as of late.
