It looks like fans of StarCraft 2 have something to look forward to. Blizzard concocted three new custom games and the beta versions are available for testing. Using the incredibly adaptable Map Editor packaged with the game, the team at Blizzard is showing us just what’s possible if you dare to try. Kind of like StarCraft, kind of like Bejeweled, with an appropriately titled: Star Jeweled,is a unique amalgamation of puzzle and strategy. In order to deploy your army on the field of battle, you must be able to match up certain combinations of gems. The larger the combination, the more energy is rewarded. This energy is the resource used to train units, as well as casting spells to hinder your enemy or help your forces. Energy is a limited resource, however, so it’s crucial that players possess knowledge of which units they are strong or weak against. Fear not, those who aren’t quite sure; mousing over a unit will display a tooltip with this vital information. Lucky you.
Second on our list is Left 2 Die. Utilizing the day/night cycle introduced in StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, this is a scenario in which a group of Terrans must survive a relentless onslaught of your infested brethren during the night only to creep out during the daytime and attempt to eradicate the encroaching swarm. In doing so, you will gain a resource known as Biomass that can be used to purchase valuable units and structures to assist in your survival.
There is also a second version of this map, entitled Night 2 Die. In this scenario, there is no daybreak. You and your ally must survive increasingly powerful waves of infested Terrans until you are inevitably overrun. The challenge here, is to see just how long you can last. Lastly on our list is Aiur Chef. All 8 players go head to head in an attempt to collect ingredients that are then used to cook up dishes only the Blizzard staff could dream up. Each round has its own unique ingredient used to chef up a tasty dish. Players must explore the map, sometimes having to kill enemies, where they will find the appropriate items used in the recipes at their disposal. Varying levels of points are gained based on the complexity of the recipe(s) cooked up by the player. As you can probably guess, whoever ends up with the most points at the end of the round wins.
Think you have what it takes to out chef, out slay and out… er- jewel your friends? If so, all of these maps are downloadable for free on battle.net.
