Your Winter 2011-2012 Movie Preview

I love movies. Granted, I don't get to go to the movie theater a lot, but I know what I like and I look forward to seeing what's coming out. That said, I thought I'd give you a sneak peek at some of the movies coming out this winter.  True, November doesn't really count as winter technically, but I'm going to dive right in right now because there is at least one good movie coming out just in time for Thanksgiving in the US.

Keep in mind, I'm not going to run down a list of all of the movies coming out this winter -- just the movies that I personally feel are worth watching. In other words, no angry letters about the lack of Twilight in this article.

November

J. Edgar

Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring the best actor to come out of Hollywood in a long time (AKA Leonardo DiCaprio), J. Edgar is a film that will -- as you may have guessed -- explore the personal and public life of J. Edgar Hoover. I know politics isn't many people's cup of tea, but for Americans especially, I think it's a good idea to take a look at our country's history. Plus, the combined power of Clint Eastwood's directing and Leo DiCaprio's acting is sure to make this a powerful and engaging drama. It will be interesting to see how accurately this film portrays Mr Hoover.

J. Edgar will have limited release on November 9th before its full release on November 11th.

Immortals

Immortals is one of those movies that looks like it will make up for how horrible the remake of Clash of the Titans was -- I hope. This movie will tell the epic tale of Theseus (Henry Cavill), the founder of Athens and a Greek hero so badass that he was sired by both a primordial king and the god Poseidon. Immortals will see Theseus up against the bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke), who will lead an army across Greece to find the mythical Bow of Epirus and overthrow the gods of Olympus. Of course, this sways away from classical Greek mythology, where Hyperion is one of the twelve Titan gods that were the children of Gaia and Ouranos and were later supplanted by the Olympians. That's okay, though. It still looks pretty rad.

Immortals comes out in 2D and 3D on November 11th.

Hugo

Hugo seems like it will be a lot of fun. An orphaned boy named Hugo lives a secret life inside of the walls of a Paris train station. He makes friends with an eccentric girl, and together they search for the answers to a mystery that links his recently-deceased father, an ill-tempered toy shop owner, and a heart-shaped lock with a missing key. The movie is based on the New York Times bestseller "The Invention of Hugao Cabret," by Brian Selznick. Directed by Martin Scorsese, this is one movie I will actually probably see in 3D since it was actually filmed in 3D, unlike so many 3D movies we see today.

Hugo comes out in 2D and 3D on November 23rd.

The Muppets

Considering there hasn't been a Muppets movie in theaters since The Muppets' Wizard of Oz in 2005, this movie is long overdue. It's been years since the Muppets have been together. They've all gone their separate ways; Fozzy Bear performs with a tribute band in Reno called "the Moopets"; Gonzo is a plumbing magnate; Animal is in anger management rehab; and Miss Piggy is a fashion editor at Vogue Paris. But when the nefarious Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) wants to raze the old Muppet Theatre and drill for recently-discovered oil, Walter -- who claims to be the world's biggest Muppet fan (but that is totally not possible, 'cuz it's me) -- and his friends Gary (Jason Segel) and Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA must help Kermit reunite the muppets to stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise $10 million to save the theater. Sounds a little too bordering on political commentary, but hey, it's the Muppets. I know I'll love it anyway.

The Muppets hits theaters on November 23rd.

December

Coriolanus

This movie only has a limited release, but it still looks really good. Of course, I may be a bit biased because I love Shakespeare's plays, but hey. We all need a little classical education. Here's the synopsis from the movie's official site:

Caius Martius ‘Coriolanus’ (Ralph Fiennes), a revered and feared Roman General is at odds with the city of Rome and his fellow citizens. Pushed by his controlling and ambitious mother Volumnia (Vanessa Redgrave) to seek the exalted and powerful position of Consul, he is loath to ingratiate himself with the masses whose votes he needs in order to secure the office. When the public refuses to support him, Coriolanus’s anger prompts a riot that culminates in his expulsion from Rome. The banished hero then allies himself with his sworn enemy Tullus Aufidius (Gerard Butler) to take his revenge on the city.

Now, don't be confused -- this sounds like it might be right up there with 300 or Immortal, with guys running around with togas, swords, and shields, but it's not. Like with the PBS production of Macbeth, directed by Rupert Goold and starring Sir Patrick Stewart as the titular character, this is a more modern setting, with flat screen TVs, walkie talkies, and military soldiers carrying assault riffles. Fiennes and Butler are both fantastic actors, and I'm really looking forward to seeing them bring new light to this Shakespeare tragedy.

Coriolanus debuts for a limited release on December 2nd.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Based on the best-selling novel by John Le Carre, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy takes place after the cold war and stars Gary Oldman as George Smiley, an intelligence officer working for MI6, the British overseas intelligence agency. The movie pulls Smiley out of semi-retirement and takes him on on a spy-hunt, searching to uncover a Soviet agent within the highest echelons of MI6.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy opens in theaters on December 9th.

The Sitter

Jonah Hill plays a college student who has been suspended for the semester and is back home, living iwth his single mom. He gets talked into babysitting the eccentric kids next door and finds himself on a wild ride and a night that he's likely never to forget. To me, this movie looks like a mix of Adventures in Babysitting and Superbad, and I really can't find any fault with that combination.

The Sitter opens on December 9th.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol

I personally have never seen any of the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible movies, but I know several people who are looking forward to this film, so it felt appropriate to add it to the list. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol sees the IMF shut down when it's implicated in the bombing of the Kremlin, causing Ethan Hunt and his new team to go rogue to clear their organization's name. It's sure to be an action-packed thriller.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol explodes onto screens December 16.

The Adventures of Tintin

I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS MOVIE! So excited that I can only use capslock, apparently. Based on a series of comic books created by the Belgian artist Herge, Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Edgar Wright, and Steven Moffat (#allhailthemoff) have come together to bring us The Adventures of Tintin. Tintin (Jamie Bell) is a young journalist who, along with his dog Snowy, set off on a treasure hunt with Commander Haddock (Andy Serkis) to look for a sunken ship commanded by Haddock's ancestor. Little do they know that they aren't the only ones searching for the ship.

Tintin sets sail for adventure on December 21st.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Daniel Craig is in every movie lately, or so it seems. Not only is he the villain in The Adventures of Tintin, but he's also the main character in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which tells the story of journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig), who is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a young computer hacker. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first film in Columbia Pictures' three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson's literary blockbuster "The Millennium Trilogy".

The trilogy begins in theaters on December 21st.

January

The Devil Inside

Apparently Paramount Pictures didn't get the memo that Halloween weekend would have been a good time for a horror movie, but that's okay. We can ring in the new year with not one horror movie, but two (the other horror movie coming out on the same day is The Possession, which you can Google). Isabella Rossi (Fernanda Andrade) seeks to understand the truth about what happened one fateful night in 1989, when emergency responders received a 9-1-1 call from Isabella's mother, Maria Rossi (Suzan Crowley), confessing that she had brutally killed three people. 20 years later, Isabella travels to the Centrino Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Italy where her mother has been locked away to find out if her mother is really mentally ill -- or if she has been demonically possessed. When she recruits two young exorcists (Simon Quarterman and Evan Helmuth) to cure her mom using unconventional methods combining both science and religion, they come face-to-face with pure evil in the form of not one, not two, not three, but four powerful demons possessing Maria.

The Devil Inside unleashes itself on theaters January 6, 2012.

Beauty and the Beast 3D

Following in the footsteps of the recent re-release of The Lion King, Disney has digitally remastered the classic "tale as old as time" and will bring it to the big screen once again -- this time in 3D. I don't think I need to tell you the plot to Beauty and the Beast -- and if I do, then I feel very sad for you. Very sad, indeed.

Beauty and the Beast 3D makes its way to theaters (also in 2D) on January 13, 2012.

The Grey

This movie will either be incredibly awesome or incredibly stupid. My boyfriend Dan and I saw a preview for this in the movie theater before seeing In Time, and just kind of looked at each other. "Is this movie... basically... Liam Neeson fights wolves?" I whispered. "Pretty much," was Dan's answer. So, yeah. Liam Neeson fights wolves. January really is pretty barren when all we've got to offer you is a horror movie, a Disney re-release, and a movie where Liam Neeson breaks bottles and holds them between his fingers like Wolverine's claws to face off with a wolf.

You can catch this epic battle on January 27, 2012.
