The last few weeks have been all about Tron, and it is no wonder. Geeks have been taking the world by storm since Bill Gates became a veritable rock star, and Disney is a marketing powerhouse if nothing else. Truth be told, Tron (1982) wasn't a great movie, but it changed things for gamers; it gave us something to embrace. Twenty-eight years later, Tron is back, bigger than ever, and the inspired products are bad ass.
Royal/T is a funky Japanese-cosplay café and gallery located in Culver City, Calif., and currently the temporary home (Nov. 19 to Dec. 23, 2010) of the Tron Pop-Up Shop. The launch party was held the night before opening day, and it was difficult not to become awe-inspired by the soft glow of the blue lights.
Everything from the bar to the promo models was expertly executed — though I'd expect nothing less from Disney.
The most related addition to the party was Tron: Legacy co-star Olivia Wilde, who plays Quorra in the film. She wore a Tron-inspired dress to the event, which is featured in the gallery. Although the ambiance was set perfectly and Olivia Wilde was stunning, the best part of the evening was testing some of the sleekest gadgets I've seen in a while. My favorites were the Tron controllers by pdp (Performance Design Products), the Daft Punk edition headsets by Monster, and the iPod docking stations.
Each showed the streamlined and contemporary look of Tron with products that will soon be the prettiest in my collection. I had a chance to listen to the soundtrack to Tron: Legacy by Daft Punk on the headsets, and both the quality and comfort were superb. Admittedly, I have never listened to Daft Punk's music, but I think it is appropriate to the film, and I liked the energy of the songs. Oh, and the shoes!
Priced at "only" $795, the funky 5-inch heels on display would make any woman's legs look great and double as weapons. Yes. I want.
It was an ah-mazing evening. My final thought as I left the party ... "I hope the movie is as good as the party was." If not, at least Disney can make its money back in the licensing fees.
