Welcome to Nfamous.net’s end of the year comics awards. Here you will find awards for whatever topic we saw fit (as long as they had something to do with comics). I’m a fan of letting people say what they want to say. I wanted these awards to show what each and every one of us had in mind when it came to this year in comics and I was pleased with the results. I found we shared a lot of similarities while at the same time, have shown our personal side of comic love. I normally go for absurdity in my comics, but this year I found a few books that tugged on my heart strings. It may seem like I've only read a few books this year, but the fact is, these few stood out farther than anything else this year. And this was a goo year. Enjoy.
Best Mini-Series Daytripper Every few years, there is a book that affects you on a deeper layer than any other book out there. This year I was blessed with the discovery of the Moon brothers’ breathtaking series about one man’s view on life and death. Daytripper tells the out of order story of Bras de Olivia Donmingos’ life. Each issue deals with a different emotion and they will all tug at your heart strings. I was so invested in this series that, when the end came, I was nearly left in tears. This book will make you emotional.
Best Black Super-Hero Power Man (Victor Hernan Alvarez) When I first saw the Shadowland: Power Man series, I thought this was a joke. The dude on the cover didn’t look anything like Luke Cage. And why was he going by Power Man again? I picked this book up on a whim and I’m glad I did. Shadowland: Power Man is the origin story of Marvel’s most interesting new Hero. He patrols his neighborhood to keep his streets safe and he uses Facebook to run his own Heroes For Hire page. A brother needs to get paid, knawmsayin’?
Best Panel Guard Dogs Riding Guard Flamingos Darkwing Duck turned my comic book world upside down this year. This book is in on the joke and loves to make tons of comic book references. This book brings the whimsy like no other and it can be incredibly absurd at points. That’s what makes Darkwing Duck attractive. This book is a fun joyride, and seeing Launchpad run away from guard dogs riding guard flamingos made me laugh out loud.
Best Cover Darkwing Duck Variant Ha! Copout time! I loved the panel where Launchpad ran from those wacky animals so much, I had James Silvani (Darkwing Duck’s artist) make it a unique variant cover at Long Beach Comic Con. That’s right! This one’s all mine bitches!
Best New Series Darkwing Duck Sorry about calling you a bitch. I got carried away. I didn’t mean to call you that. We still friends? Good, cause I didn’t want to ruin our friendship over a silly comic book. I mean, I know it’s great and I’m the only one who owns it, but you can come over and I’ll show it to you. It’s on my wall-o-comics. It’s right next to my San Diego Comic Con variant of Darkwing Duck I got signed by the writer, artist, and creator or Darkwing Duck. I’d scan that issue as well, but you’d get even more jealous when you see them all writing out cool things for me. Oh man, look at me, I’m doing it again. Can you tell that I like Darkwing Duck?
Best Single Issue Daytripper #10 It’s not a spoiler to say the this book’s main character, Bras de Olivia Domingos, (can you tell I like saying that?) dies at the end of every issue. It’s just how the book is. It’s almost a “What if I died at that point in time?” kind of thing. It really makes you think about your own life and what you’d be leaving behind. I didn’t think comics could get any better than the depressing issue #8, but when the final issue arrived, I was left speechless. I nearly broke out in tears as I was saying farewell to what will probably surpass I Kill Giants as my favorite collected story. This is a comic I can show people who don’t take comics seriously that will wow them completely. This is literature and the ending is a work of art in itself.
Best Weapon...EVER!!! Combat Spoon One of the main reasons why I read comics is to have fun. It brightens my day when I’m at work and it fills my head with the weirdest shit. Speaking of weird shit, Action Comics #893 featured an epic battle between Lex Luthor and Gorilla Grodd armed with his biggest combat spoon. That’s right, a fucking combat spoon! I’m not going into the details, but Luthor tricks Grodd into thinking that a spoon would make him the victor. Who emerges victorious in this epic battle? It’s me and the internet. Thank you DC, you made my day and a lot of other days after that.
Biggest Disappointment Marvel’s Heroic Age I’m not going to go into full detail on this subject (for a larger discussion on Marvel’s Heroic Age, check out episode 12 of Comic Nsanity) but I’d like to hit on one big point. When the Marvel Universe was in a dark place, things were very interesting. It separated itself from DC in a way we haven’t seen in years. Before the Heroic Age, during the Siege on Asgard, Marvel was billing it as the event many years in the making. According to Marvel, Brian Michael Bendis had this in mind the whole time. Why would Bendis ruin the Avengers, then the Mutants, then the Super Hero community if his endgame was to fix it? The only thing I can think of was to get people to give a shit about The Avengers again. Back when there was only one Avengers title (not counting West Coast), it seemed to be a book that was just there because it was The Avengers. I mean Marvel wasn’t too kind to a lot of its books during the nineties. The book with all the biggest heroes should be the highest selling book, shouldn’t it? Well the Marvel Universe is in almost the same position it was six or seven years ago, but now we have at least four Avengers books and they’re all top sellers. I don’t even have enough room to talk about how boring all the new books are and why there’s an Avengers and New Avengers reboot at the same time. Just listen to our podcast.
Best Freak The American Vampire For most of the year, I felt burned out when it came to the vampires. The Twilight craze that’s been fogging our media lately has made me numb to it all. I just couldn’t give a shit. Then I snapped out of it. I don’t hate Vampires, I just hate how people glamorize them. They’re the rapist of the monster world. They’re not beautiful beings at all! When the first hardcover to American Vampire came out, I was delighted to see this new take on vampire mythology. There’s the old fashioned European Vampires and there’s the new American Vampires. These American Vampires are way more powerful, can go out in the sunlight, and are ugly as hell. These Vampires are serious business!
Best Comic Book That Is Also A Tie-In To An HBO Series That My Wife Loves Which Contains Vampires In Louisiana..... Oh And She Totally Has Every Single Variant Cover.... Like All Of Them.... Seriously This sound a lot like True Blood... Hey wait! How did this get in here anyway?

Interesting choices. I can't
Interesting choices. I can't get into Darkwing Duck, though. I think probably because I never watched the show. That was my brother's, thing. Give me GI Joe, Transformers or Robotech instead.
What's so funny about Truth, Justice and the American Way?
