So the time has come for the release of Detective Comics 1 (featuring Batman) and Action Comics 1 (featuring Superman)! First of all I’m a big time Marvel Comics fan; but I have to say these D.C. Comics characters that are rebooted are totally awesome! I read Action Comics first and I was very pleased with the direction they are going with the Man of Steel. Basically the story is that Superman is a vigilante, much like Batman, but the public and government see him as a threat to national security since he is pretty much unstoppable. Throughout the story he is saving innocent people, but of course the police and military are hunting Superman down. I like this approach because there was a part in the comic that really shows off the new personality of the Man of Steel, which is pretty much a morally correct, but badass no-holds-barred hero. In case you were worried about the villain - don’t; Lex Luther is back and as smart as ever, willing to do anything to stop The Man of Steel. In short, I really loved the new adaptation of Superman in Action Comics and I really think that everyone else will love it too.
What can say about Detective Comics other than utter perfection and awesomeness? This new take on the Dark Knight is very gritty and sadistic. Batman, much like Superman, is a vigilante, but only focused on the citizens of Gotham City, not like Superman where he has become a global threat in some people’s eyes. The story starts off with Batman looking for, who else - the Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker! The Dark Knight is basically trying to find out motives of the Jokers current killing and crime sprees in Gotham City. While it seems that Batman’s only ally is Commissioner Gordon, Gotham City seems to still rely on The Dark Knight to protect them for the Joker. The art was beautiful and the end was one of the most socking endings that I ever read in a comic. Detective Comics certainly brought back my passion for the art of comics and left me wanting more.
