Weezul's Top Comic Picks for 2010

“Welcome to Nfamous.net’s end of the year comics awards.  Here you will find awards for whatever topic we saw fit (as long as they had something to do with comics).  I’m a fan of letting people say what they want to say.  I wanted these awards to show what each and every one of us had in mind when it came to this year in comics and I was pleased with the results.  I found we shared a lot of similarities while at the same time, have shown our personal side of comic love.  Second on our list, we have friend of the site, and Comic Nsanity, Weezul.  Weezul dove into the depths of the comic book world and found some real gems.  Enjoy." --Shadow

Best Mini Series

Star Wars Blood Ties

Boba Fett has always been a man of mystery. Possibly one of the originals in all of Fairytale Land. But did you know he had a “brother”?  Neither did he.  Ok, so technically, Connor Freeman isn’t Boba Fett’s brother. He’s the son of an escaped clone that Jango Fett killed.  But Jango having a moment of integrity, decided to leave an inheritance for Connor for his life as an adult. Fast forward 20 or so years, and now Boba Fett is out to collect on the bounty placed on the head of Connor Freeman by a local crime boss.

The story is a solid one, and it’s good to always get more insight into the life and times of one of the galaxies greatest bounty hunters.  Boba Fett is still as ruthless as they come, but in this story, it does allow you to see a different side then the cold, callous man in the Mandalorian armor.

Best Stand Alone Issue

Superman/Batman 76

What makes Superman super is, well, everything. He is the uber hero, the one that everyone strives to be like whether they want to or not. He’s the best and the brightest. But he can’t solve every problem, and he can’t be everywhere. And what makes Superman “super” is how he deals with this shortcoming.  This single story tackles his point of view of watching one of his oldest, closest, friends, Batman, die at the hands of Darkseid during Final Crisis.

Add to the helplessness that Superman is feeling, is having to deal with Dick Grayson having taken up the mantle of the Bat to carry on the legacy. Simply put, Superman is not happy.

It’s a great story that shows a side of Superman that is not often seen – one where not every problem can be resolved by super speed, breath or anything. Superman wasn’t fast enough to save his friend and partner, and he now has to deal with grief, the reconciliation and the acceptance.

Best Story Arc

“Tainted Love” – Ultimate Spider-Man 9-14

Take a beloved , yet flawed character. Add a new take on an old villain, oh, and give that villain a twin sister. Let them ruin the reputation of both the masked hero and the plain-clothed pubescent, for fun. Sprinkle in the opportunity for the villain toy with the emotions of the romantic interests. Cook at 375 degrees. When finished, let the secret identity of the hero be found out by another nemesis, and you have the recipe for one of the best story arcs in comics.

The ramifications of this storyline are going to be felt for some time long as Peter Parker now has to put his life back together given the recent mess The Chameleon Twins made of it. It’s not something that will set a new status quo for the book, but it is a great setup for a new direction coming in the next few months.

Best New Series

Zatanna

Zatanna is a character who should have had a book long, long ago. She’s been integral into the DC Universe since her debut in the 1960’s.  She’s potentially one of the most powerful characters in the DCU having already conducted a mind wipe of Batman and an established weapon against Superman should the need ever arise – magic.

While barely a year old, her series has been off the beaten path, but still fun, engaging, and as captivating as one would presume her live show to be.  If you’re not reading this book, you’re missing out on a great ride that maintains its superhero roots, but doesn’t get caught up in the rules of most capes & tights books.

Character Who Never Needed His Own Series, Let Alone More Than One

Deadpool

Deadpool has quickly become the Wolverine of this decade. He’s got more books than our favorite Canucklehead ever had (though as we move into 2011, this is subject to change).  Don’t get me wrong, when Rob Liefeld introduced us to Deadpool back in 1991, he was an instant hit.  His popularity as the Merc with a Mouth  only continued to rise over the course of the next 20 years, but is he really worth a series of series?

Deadpool is fun, charismatic, and tragic. He’s part of the Weapon X program which puts him in with the other bad boys of mutantdom (Wolverine, Sabertooth, Wild Child, etc.) He’s got swords, guns, and arguably better beatdown banter then Spider-Man.  But again? Deadpool Corps? Deadpool Team-Up? I think it’s time to give him the Gambit treatment and put him on the back burner for awhile so someone else can have the spotlight.
