by Shadow on 08.18.10 ![]() Witchblade: Due Process is a one shot story following Sara Pezzini, the bearer of the Witchblade, as she tries to fix a situation she was involved in ten years ago. When she was a rookie cop, Sara, was involved in a bust which lead to the arrest of one William Hicks. She knew what she did was wrong. It just took her ten years to gather evidence and muster the courage to present her case. She wanted to make things right for William.
But ten years in jail can do things to a man, innocent or otherwise. You see, in order to try and protect his family, William allied himself with a demon knows as Agares. Agares is the kind of demon who feeds on souls. Not any kind of soul will do. Agares needs completely pure souls. In order to get what he wants, Agares bends the rules a little bit and makes it so any physical harm William makes will, almost immediately, be undone. This way, William’s soul is still good. If you can’t prove it, you can’t be at fault. I guess this works in the spiritual realm as well.
The story starts at a nice pace, but it’s almost over as soon as it takes off. There’s no time to build any character. I get it, Sera wants to make things right and William will do anything to protect his family. Maybe this comic just goes to show you that life is fucked up. I just didn’t have time to get into this issue before it finished. When it came to the art, I was looking forward to this one. The cover fooled me. Sometimes a comic’s cover art will be done by a different artist to attract potential customers. This isn’t one of those times. Alina Urusov just drew the cover in a different style as the rest of the book. The artwork inside is a photo-referenced style with a water color style on top. This makes most everything look more real than normal comics without the creepiness of just using photos. This alone wouldn’t be an issue if there wasn’t any kind of supernatural element to the book. The two styles cant seem to mix and it takes me out of the experience.
