by TheAvenger on 09.30.11 ![]() This week I went a day late to pick up my weekly comic book fix. I went knowing that Nightwing 1 was out and had the slight intention of picking it up. Once I got to the comic section of the store, I saw it there; the last one a matter of fact - and the price went up from $2.99 to $6! Then, one of the store associates that worked there came up to me and told me “You know, this is the last copy of Nightwing 1. We just got them in yesterday and there is only one left.” I made the decision right then and there to make one of the best comic purchases of all time (except for Detective Comics). So when I awoke the next day I read it and, of course, I was not disappointed.
The story is about Dick Grayson (Nightwing) fighting crime by himself; literally. Batman (Bruce Wayne) is gone for some reason and I suppose as the story evolves we will find out why, but Dick, unlike Bruce, lives in the heart of Gotham City. Because Dick, unlike Bruce, believes that living in the middle of the horror that they protect makes him more familiar, and better as a protector, of Gotham City. Dick Grayson also fights with some inner demons in this comic as well. Haley’s Circus, which is the circus that Dick was in before his parents died, is in town and Dick struggles whether or not to visit his old friends. Since Nightwing is the only hero protecting Gotham City, he has enemies that he is not aware of. Towards the end of the comic, Nightwing has an assassin who is trying to kill him, and the book ends with a big to be continued.
My final assessment of the new Nightwing 1 is simply perfection. It has a heavy influence from Batman, obviously, and I know I say this a lot, but I cannot wait for the second issue to come out. I am slowly becoming a DC fan over Marvel, and that’s a huge statement coming from me. Overall I’m very impressed by the direction DC has gone, and this is the start of a new era of comics - period.
