XCOM: UFO Defense is a video game created by Microprose in 1993. It is a turn-based strategy game lauded by many gaming press outlets as the best strategy game, if not the best video game of all time. I have always been a fan and have even recently downloaded every game in the series through Steam. When I found there was going to be a remake by 2K Games, I was more than excited ... until I found out it was going to be remade as a first-person shooter. WTF?! I was NOT happy! As a result, I was overjoyed at the opportunity to get a first impression of the 2K Games version during E3.
Quite a few things have changed besides the fact the game is now a first-person shooter. First, the time setting has changed. This XCOM is set in the 1950s United States instead of the global future setting of the previous games. The research and development aspect is going to be quite different, but the guys at 2K were not at liberty to go into detail as to how. There were no "greys" in this version either. The aliens we saw were very different ... and harder to kill! I don't want to give away too much, but imagine trying to kill a skyscraper with a shotgun ... yeah! You also get two "sidekicks" that accompany you on each mission. There is no large squad of soldiers in this game!
All in all, despite my original reservations regarding this new version of XCOM, I am excited about this game. It could easily have been called something else entirely, but from what I saw, it does the original franchise justice. It's almost like a prequel. We shall see.
