by TheDCD on 04.11.11 ![]() It was inevitable. With the success of the Jurassic Park franchise (as long ago as it might seem), people get into dinosaurs more than they’d like to admit. So it was just a matter of time before a game company tried its hand at making them appear in new games. Ubisoft has done just that with Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D, a variation of its previously released Wii game. And just like that one, this version is doomed for the tar pits. First off, while it does look impressive with its 3D environments and detailed dino animation, there’s really not much to it. The levels themselves don’t really have much happening, save for the next big creature that you have to face off against in order to proceed on your merry little way. There’s hardly any exploration here that’s worthwhile, and even if you manage to run into something unique from yourself, the mapped animations don’t really show that much diversity. Secondly, the audio is bleah. The music isn’t really much to listen to at all, and the sound effects, while loyal to any given museum that you might attend with a dinosaur exhibit, are repetitive. There’s hardly anything different that plays during a fight sequence, no matter who you’re hitting or where you’re hitting them. Talk about generic. But lastly, and here’s what killed it for me, the gameplay. It just never seems to satisfy. Upon seeing this game, we were hoping that it would go for a similar vibe to Atari’s classic beat-em-up Primal Rage, but, surprise, it doesn’t even go that far. The game is a button-mashing combat affair, where you can easily defeat your opponent by just being quicker on the draw. Now, real dinosaur battles, we’re guessing, didn’t go this easily, so why should virtual ones be the same way? You fight, move on through the same empty terrain, fight again and…yawn. What was the point again? It’s too bad, because Combat of Giants is a sorely missed opportunity when it comes to learning more about dinosaurs. There are several species to fight against here, and it would’ve been great had Ubisoft delved deep and told us exactly what makes this Combat of Giants so interesting. Instead, we get the “Dinosaurs For Dummies” edition, where we chomp first and ask questions later. And the chomp isn’t even that satisfying. Really, even if you have an unfathomed love for dinosaurs, you shouldn’t subject yourself to Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D. Despite the neat visual effect, there’s not much to this game at all, and it’s not very fun to play. Consider it stuck in the Stone Age…and on the 3DS, that’s the last place you want to be.
