by Arcee on 06.16.10 ![]() Today, I had the luck and pleasure to sit in during a presentation by Gazillion Entertainment for Codemasters forthcoming title, Jumpgate Evolution. A true sequel to the classic Jumpgate: The Reconstruction Initiative released back in 2001, JGE will again place players in the middle of a living space MMOG (massively multiplayer online game) in the middle of a war between three long time rival nations - the corrupted Solrain Commonwealth, the faithful Quantar Paths, and the militaristic Octavian Empire. Those in attendance were shown real-time gameplay using the Octavian Empire. Interestingly enough, you do not start off as an underling or anything like that; you actually start off as a member of an elite squad in the empire's military. That doesn't mean that you will have to quickly get a handle on the most difficult matters of the quests; the people at NetDevil, the developers of the game, promise that players will have a chance to learn as you go, just that they won't have to play through mundane tasks.
We are quick to notice just how beautiful the graphics in the game are as the presenters explain that each realm in the game is fully loaded and will encompass entire sectors of space. What that means for players is that each realm will contain dozens of live battles throughout the realm taking place on different space stations, space areas, and even planets without any further reloading. To get to new realms, players would use the "jumpgates" to move from realm to realm to access the entire known JGE universe.
Aside from the main path Player vs Enviroment (PvE) of Jumpgate Evolution, the game will include Player vs Player (PvP) areas as well, with a risk/reward system that will punish or benefit players depending on how soft or hardcore a player decides to use as his tactics. In other words, play it safe and gain little rewards when successful but lose little when defeated - and the complete opposite for hardcore players. It all depends on just how far a player is willing to go to complete an objective.
