First Impressions: Marvel Super Hero Squad Online

At the Gazillion Entertainment booth, I had the distinct pleasure to view and play the forthcoming Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) based on Marvel Comics' popular toy line - The Marvel Super Hero Squad. You take control of one of Marvel's most popular super heroes including the Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, and Wolverine while you take on the baddest of the bad in the likes of Doctor Doom, the Abomination, Sabertooth, and the Green Goblin.

As I walked up to the PC-rigged big screen television, I was impressed with just how much it looked like the cartoon series that airs on the Cartoon Network. The graphics looked clean and crisp and from what I saw on the other screens playing the demo there didn't seem to be any awkward movements or clunkiness as you see in other MMOs. Maybe because the simple designs of the MSHS characters designs lend themselves to help this along.

So now I am up at the mouse and keyboard. First thing first, the game is easy to play. I mean, the person at the booth told me I would need no instruction to go ahead and play and she was right. I stepped right on in and was able to instinctively play this game. It is based on point and click controls. Want to make your super hero move along the screen? Just hold the left mouse button down and move the cursor around and your character follows moving to where the cursor is currently over. To make them jump all you have to do is hit the space bar. Are you playing as a character that can fly? Gazillion simplified this by proving "launch" rings of which you place your flying super hero over, click, and the hero will fly around the city to the closest launch ring. It takes away a bit of the control but it does make it easier for all players.

And that is something that I should make clear right now - the game is meant for everyone to play. The people at the booth made it a big point to say that I would have fun playing this with my children. And that is not to say that it takes anything away from the fun of the game; just go into this one thinking that you may not feel as challenged as you would with some of the more mature MMO games out there.

Back to the game: for combat, the system is also point and shoot based and will let you deliver either chained attacks or one powerful blast or hit by charging it up using either the left or right mouse buttons. To enter a combat zone, either to fight villains or even for some PvP action, simply choose what area of the game you want to go to from an on screen menu. In these levels, you can invite up to four friends to join you as you battle through hordes of minions to get to the boss villain.

For some reason I was allowed to play the game for a good half hour. I don't know why, but I am glad that I was because I did have a lot of fun with it. I don't know if without kids I would buy this game. But because I do have kids who are going to get into gaming soon, I can see myself buying this when it releases sometime in 2011. But unless you are a hardcore Marvel fan I don't see many people buying this one. Which is a shame because it is pretty fun. I just think that I will wait a bit more before making a full decision on this one.
