Hands On: Tron: Evolution

There were a ton of action-adventure games at this year’s E3, but only a handful of them really stood out. Fortunately, Tron: Evolution was one of those; the fresh look and familiar feel have me anxious to get my hands on the completed game, especially if I can use one of those SWEET Tron controllers from PDP. So, what’s it like? I thought you’d never ask.

The look of Tron: Evolution, well, there is nothing else like it other than Tron itself. The glowing circuitry that illuminates the dark world is recreated beautifully. The environments are sleek and crisp, floating platforms are a common element of the landscape and make for some nice plat forming. Various objects are present allowing you to vault over gaps and smash through windows. The world of Tron has never looked so sexy.

As I mentioned, there is a certain familiarity in controls. I was reminded of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This was easily one of my favorite games of the last generation of consoles, so I‘ve got no complaints about the similarities. Tron is heavy on acrobatics and fast paced. It is quite a bit quicker than PoP, but running on walls and leaping off of enemies feels just as good. Your disc is your primary weapon and you fling it about as effectively as Simon Belmont wields a whip. Cleave enemies and virus ridden programs to ribbons in the blink of an eye. The mechanics are all very intuitive and respond just as they should. I did not have an opportunity to try out the Light Cycle, but it looks to be just as much fun.

Tron: Evolution is shaping up to be one of the very few games based on a movie franchise to actually be worth the money. It sounds like the plot will be incentive enough to play; fill in the gaps between Tron and Tron: Legacy as the game’s storyline takes place between the two. Tron Evolution will be coming to PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and what looked like a slightly different version for the Wii. Get your disc charged and ready, because in November of this year you’re going to have a whole lot of throwing to do.
