Back to the Future: The Game - Episode II: Get Tannen!

The original Back To the Future episode for the iPad, the one that started this whole new story arc, attracted a lot of fans from the dedicated sci-fi/comedy 80’s movie series, and for good reason.  Telltale Games started off this new quintology on the right foot, with an intriguing storyline and some interesting puzzles.  Now the second of the five-part series, Get Tannen!, is available on the iPad, and though it runs into a few hiccups, there’s no question that fans will enjoy this.

Somehow, Marty McFly and his scientist buddy Doc Brown have screwed up history with their time-travel adventures.  Everything was supposed to be resolved at this point, but they now need to go back over their own footsteps and figure things out, or else Marty will cease to exist.  He even keeps disappearing over the course of the episode, and only by going back on the right track can he prevent become non-existent.  It’s a little more critical than the first episode, but also much more thrilling to play this time around.

See, not only do you have to content with solving puzzles and occasionally running across questionable characters (like a lady who has no choice but to do Tannen’s bidding), but you also have to avoid yourself.  See, Marty and Doc have covered this ground before, and to run into them would cause a rift in the space-time continuum.  And that’s worse than non-existence, folks.  So you have to play it carefully as you solve puzzles, and whatever you do, don’t run into yourself.

That doesn’t make the game difficult by any means.  Like the first Back To the Future, you can use guides to help you solve puzzles if you get stuck, although most of them are fairly easy to figure out.  It sets up for the forthcoming third chapter in the series, which should be releasing any day now.

The touch-screen gameplay isn’t entirely user-friendly, but you can get the job done with enough manipulation.  Guiding Marty around on the screen takes some getting used to, as he doesn’t entirely go EXACTLY where you need him to go.  Still, with some practice, you’ll get the hang of it, using special items and keeping in contact with Doc as you try to make things right.

As for the presentation, it’s slightly down a notch.  The graphics are slightly uglier this time around, with spots of fuzziness here and there.  The character models aren’t bad, though, and Telltale did a good job with most of the in-game environment, recreating Hill Valley.  The voicework is top notch as well, especially with Christopher Lloyd recreating his role of Doc Brown.  He doesn’t sound like he missed a beat at all.

Back To the Future fans should drop a few bucks on this and get back into the adventure right away.  Everyone else should probably go watch the movies again before making this journey back in time.  Otherwise, you’re bound to be going, “Great Scott!
