Tangled: The Video Game

If you've got little ones in your family or if you're a fan of Disney animation in general, chances are you've already seen Tangled, a surprisingly enjoyable 3-D adventure loosely based on the story of Rapunzel, but with a contemporary twist and the always adorable voicework of Mandy Moore. Plus, Chuck — that is, Zachary Levi — is in it, so there's no fault there either. Right on schedule, Disney has also released a video game based on the film, and, although it's not terrible, we can't see recommending it outside of the targeted audience — in this case, kids and mega-fans of the film.

Tangled The Video Game

In the game, you work in a cooperative manner between the beautiful Rapunzel, with her long locks of hair, and Flynn, a troublemaking thief who knows his way around cutting through bushes. You'll switch between them to get through each stage, using Rapunzel's long hair to make flowers grow (don't ask) and swing across branches, while occasionally helping Flynn reach higher ground. Meanwhile, Flynn will use his dagger to fight enemies and cut down previously aforementioned bushes, while occasionally digging for treasures. It's a simple push-button process, and the partner you aren't controlling automatically follows you, unless they're perched at a cooperative point, like with Rapunzel letting down her hair.

It's not rocket science. Disney made this game with kids in mind, and they'll have a ball rolling through each of the game's stages, collecting icons, coins, and other goods as they try to get Rapunzel and Flynn to their goal. If the main story mode wasn't enough, the game also features challenges, in which you'll need to meet certain objectives within the fastest time possible to earn virtual rewards. Some of these challenges, like one that has you pulling down barrels while Flynn breaks them, aren't bad. Others, though, should be skipped after a play through.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with Tangled: The Video Game, as it plays adequately enough and even has co-op support, should you want to involve a sibling or other family member. By the same token, it also fails to innovate. The graphics are nothing special, working in a side-scrolling/3-D fashion we've seen before in countless games. The animation's OK, but aside from Rapunzel's glowing locks of hair, nothing really stands out. The music is decent but tends to repeat, and the voiceover actors are acceptable, even though they occasionally sound like dunderheads. Do we REALLY need Rapunzel telling us she's going to swing across a branch every time she approaches it? No. No, we don't.

Tangled The Video Game

If you're a fan of the movie or have a family full of happy Wii gamers, and Epic Mickey isn't enough to fulfill their needs, Tangled: The Video Game is a safe bet. Everyone else, though, should probably move on to another product. You really aren't missing much here.
