Tap Tap Revolution: Justin Bieber Revenge

Tap Tap Revenge has been around awhile and seems to have the right idea about how to make a marketable rhythm game for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Following suit with the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises, Tap Tap now has downloadable packs available for specific artists. One of the newest editions is Justin Bieber Revenge. Is it worth the $4.99 you'll have to shell out to listen to this tween heartthrob?

Tap Tap has always had solid gameplay, and the controls are intuitive and respond well. There are three lines running vertically from top to bottom of the screen. An icon comes down into a hit zone for each line, and you must touch them in sync with the beat or shake in the direction they are pointing. It's simple, and it works.

In this oh-so-adorable iteration of the series that flaunts "I <3 Justin Bieber" all over the place. Career Mode is solo play in which the objective is to max out your score. Battle Mode will allow you to take on another 10- or 15-year-old girl in a friendly competition to see who really hearts Justin. And OMG, there are like totally chat rooms in here! So, after you've gotten your fill of some teen-pop music (as if that were possible), you can head over to gush about JB.

The bottom line is this: You're gonna download the music you like. The play mechanics are good, and if you're listening to music you like, this game is quite a bit of fun. The only real complaint I have is the difficulty; there seems to be a pretty big gap between Medium and Hard settings. If your core demographic is younger than your normal audience, maybe the difficulty level should be a bit lower. Hard and Extreme are tough even for hardcore video game vets.

If you're a fan of the artist, $4.99 is not a bad deal; you get 11 tracks in this Justin Bieber edition. However, I would really have to love the music to drop five bucks ... you know ... considering you can get an album you can bump anywhere for about twice the price. I would drop good money on a Michael Jackson pack! Tap Tap is a great series that is well-designed, but the Justin Bieber release just isn't for me.

Justin Bieber Revenge: 1 out of 5
Tap Tap to music you like: 4 out of 5
